Bestselling author Erik Larson, famous for Devil in the White City and In the Garden of Beasts, discusses his most recent book, Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania, a poignant and riveting account of the fateful torpedoing that led to the U.S. entering World War I. Back in 1915, with the war entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner sailed out of New York bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. Though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone, the passengers felt at ease as it was believed that the gentlemanly strictures of warfare would keep civilian ships safe from attack. Germany, however, was about to change the rules of the game. Whether you’ve read the book already or want to, don’t miss hearing Larson talk about it at Lafayette Library.
